Yet for most of the University of Portland's history there was not a permanent home for campus worship, and the chapel resided in West Hall, Christie Hall, or St. Mary's. The dream of a lasting testament to and refuge for the faith of the campus community took wing in 1953, when Rev. James Fogarty, C.S.C., set up a chapel trust fund with a small family inheritance. The decision to build, however, did not come until 1985. By that time the chapel fund had grown close to a million dollars, under the care of its custodian, Rev. James Anderson, C.S.C., with the periodic contributions of a number of people who shared the dream.
