In 1983 an art advisory committee was formed to add signal sculpture to the campus. In 1987 Father Oddo suggested that a sculptor be commissioned to create a work that reflected both the University's Catholicity and its openness to all spiritual inquiry. The sculptor chosen was Portland artist Donovan Peterson. In 1991, two years after Father Oddo's death, University president Rev. David T. Tyson, C.S.C., suggested that the sculpture would be a poignant memorial to Oddo's spirit.
