Paul E. Waldschmidt, CSC, who came to the University in 1955 as Vice President and was named President in 1962. His tenure lasted 16 years until 1978 when he was appointed auxiliary bishop of Portland, a position he held until health issues required his retirement in 1990. He died on October 20, 1994, after a heart attack at the age of 74. Waldschmidt Hall’s entrance was then draped with black cloth and a wreath to mourn this beloved President. During his tenure, enrollment rose almost threefold to over 2500; five important buildings were constructed (Mehling Hall, Shipstad Hall, Buckley Center, Mago Hunt Center, and a doubling of the size of the library); the overseas study program in Salzburg, Austria was begun; and ownership of the University was transferred from the Holy Cross Congregation of priests and brothers to a lay board of regents.
