Joseph Boyle, C.S.C., in 1936.  Rev. Michael Early, C.S.C., completed plans for the Science Building (now Romanaggi Hall), erected in 1937. The next year he saw the construction of The Commons (now St. Mary's Student Center). \"An interesting footnote is that Early, on the eve of becoming president in 1935, established a required swimming program for all students. As a student at Columbia before World War I, he nearly drowned in a boating accident on the river because of his inability to swim. A classmate, Herbert Heywood, saved his life. He never forgot the incident and demanded that every student graduating from Columbia be able to swim.\" (James T.
