He is 5'6 tall and weighs 90 pounds. He arrived on campus in a pickup truck. He was carved from alder by Oregon artist Dick Helzer, at the invitation of the University's Office of Campus Ministry…. Helzer, a professor of sculpture and drawing at Portland Community College and an artist in wood and stone for more than three decades, worked for more than six months on Christ and His mahogany cross. Helzer wanted to make a strong and vigorous Christ, a man whose body showed his training as a carpenter and his years of relentless walking. He wanted to carve a Christ who was clearly Semitic. …He wanted to carve a figure of calm dignity and powerful grace.\" (by the editor, Portland, The University of Portland Magazine, Winter 2002, p. 24) A blessing of the 10 feet tall crucifix was held on September 8, 2002, during the 10:30 am Sunday Mass.
