By 1892 the hospital decided to establish a nursing school and in 1907 a separate nurses' residence with classrooms was established: St. Theresa Hall. When the collegiate nursing program began as part of Columbia University in 1934, the student nurses continued to live and study at St. Theresa Hall and St. Vincent Hospital. Six university professors assigned to conduct classes in the nurses' residence commuted from the University to the hospital. A regular travel schedule was arranged, with male students occasionally assigned to chauffeur professors across the river.
