Colorado. The Ice Core Sculptures and Paintings intellectually originated in 1991, after I returned from time spent in Alaskan ice fields where I observed ice drilling activity. Several of the ice core forms had been set on snow-covered pebbled ground, catching the light of the day refracted in various prisms and colors, and catching my attention. My camera unfortunately was out of battery; however, the compositional quality of line against texture, combined with radiant light, remained in my thoughts. Many of my compositions in paintings and sculpture utilize script or word phrases as an integral component in the planning and execution of a concept. Upon returning to the studio, I decided to begin a new series on the subject of the ice core images that had caught my attention in Alaska. Another inspiration for the series was from several visits to Patagonia, and specifically to the CADIC-CONICET science facility in Ushuaia, Argentina under the direction of professor Dr. Jorge Rabassa. At the institute, interviews with scientists on analysis and research reinforced my approaches to the painting theme. In attempting to simplify the composition into geometric forms and textures, I emphasized the contrasting values of light and dark in the paintings. (It was only after completion of the paintings series that I decided to begin a new sculpture group featuring replicated ice core forms in three-dimensional sculptures with imbedded text mimicking DNA material into the ice cores’ matrix.) These paintings are intended to bring recognition to the moral and critical imperative of recognizing climate change, and to educate students and the mass public about the importance of preserving the environment. These have been the goals and themes I have portrayed in artwork for the past three decades. The Ice Core Paintings were originally intended to be exhibited in installation sequences of three paintings as a triptych to visually bounce and vibrate in the viewer’s eye. The ice core painting series was also a happy play for me in the studio, and a release from the later laborious ice core sculpture production. The series, visually depicting the ice cores in oil on canvas, links to the ice core sculptures later completed over the past eight years. Some of these paintings and sculptures are currently exhibited by NOAA and the National Marine Sanctuary program in Washington D.C. In addition, one of the paintings from this series has been acquired by the Hallie Ford Museum of Art in Salem, Oregon, in 2015, and is now part of their permanent collection. A triptych of three paintings was acquired by the University of Portland in 2016 for permanent installation in the Clark Library."},{"label":"Style Period","value":["Contemporary"]},{"label":"Date","value":"2007"},{"label":"Artist","value":["Colorado, K.
