His tenure of seventeen years has been the longest in the history of the University, until he was named auxiliary bishop of Portland in 1978. At his death in 1994, Rev. David Tyson, C.S.C. (president 1990-2003) said that he \"was, without a doubt, the most significant and accomplished president in the history of the University of Portland. His labors are evident literally everywhere on The Bluff -- from the flowers he planted by hand, to the foreign study programs he founded, to the many academic programs he nourished, to the key buildings he had erected. Under his administration the University built its first major academic center, Buckley Hall. We built the Wilson Clark Library. We built three of our five residence halls.
