Often there is significant lag time between commitment of bequest and death of donor, when operational changes in the beneficiary organization may occur that make adherence to bequest restrictions difficult. Governance systems, external to and within the organization, should exist to monitor the organization’s acceptance and use of bequests. Using the $138 million bequest by Donald and Mildred Othmer to Long Island College Hospital as an example, we consider the stewardship of charitable bequests and the failure of the governance mechanisms in accepting and maintaining bequest restrictions."},{"label":"Volume","value":"13"},{"label":"Issue","value":"3"},{"label":"Publication Date","value":"D:00 M:11 Y:2016"},{"label":"Publication Information","value":"Archived version is the final published version."}],"description":"Transparency and Accountability for Bequests: The Case of Long Island College Hospital","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/portland/iiif/a8872eef-6f47-4726-83c3-0c0b8c6c2b62/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"Transparency and Accountability for Bequests- The Case of Long Is-2","height":1651,"width":1275,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/portland/iiif/e60c2057-c9c7-48e3-a28b-bcdd7bdb669d/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/portland/iiif/e60c2057-c9c7-48e3-a28b-bcdd7bdb669d","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":512,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":1651,"width":1275},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/portland/iiif/a8872eef-6f47-4726-83c3-0c0b8c6c2b62/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/portland/iiif/e60c2057-c9c7-48e3-a28b-bcdd7bdb669d/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/portland/iiif/e60c2057-c9c7-48e3-a28b-bcdd7bdb669d/full/300,300/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/portland/iiif/logo"}
