The Portland Knights began functioning in the Fall of 1937 as a hospitality committee for visiting football teams. After football season, the club took in many new members and in March 1938, received a charter from the national organization of Intercollegiate Knights.  The Knights managed the Oregon Catholic High School Basketball tournament, aided track officials in track meets on the Portland oval, and aided in the annual campus cleanup day.
