Michael Quinlan, C.S.C., was a 28-year-old professor of English at the University of Notre Dame when named first Holy Cross priest as president of Columbia University in 1902. He found himself president of the grammar school, high school and college programs, and he immediately began expanding the University: the Colosseum (a gigantic field house) in 1903 and a residence for the Sisters of the Presentation who arrived exiled from France that same year. He also added some forty acres to the size of the campus. There were two graduates in 1903 but by 1906 the number ballooned to six.
