In 1969, the new residence hall was named for benefactor and 1963 honorary alumnus, Eddie  H. Shipstad, founder of the famous Shipstad and Johnson Ice Follies. The brick exterior building with two four-story wings served male residents only until the fall of 1987 when Shipstad Hall became the first co-educational dormitory on campus.
