A trust fund was established in 1953 in anticipation of building a separate chapel. From 1911 until 1959, the chapel of Christie Hall served as the university's main public place of prayer until part of St. Mary's Hall, the first separate dining facility on campus, was converted to St. Mary's Chapel and a new Commons was built in 1959.
