Ground broke on the Harry A. Merlo Field on April 23, 1990 and the first soccer match on the new field was played September 23, 1990. University of Washington beat Portland 1-0. A permanent stadium was added to the field in 1991 making this the Merlo Field Stadium. The grandstand could hold 4300 fans and the news media had 40 spaces allotted to them for reporting. The players had a new playing field that was 75 yard by 120 yards. Following the death of Soccer Coach Clive Charles in 2003, the soccer stadium was renamed the Clive Charles Soccer Complex and a campaign was begun to raise funds for the expansion and upgrade of the soccer facility.
