Joseph Kelley, C.S.C., was the first to preside at the graduation of a four-year college class in 1929 which had a grand total of six graduates. In 1933 Kelley improved the organization of the University by creating three distinct division units: business operations, student life, and academic studies. Within the latter was a further  division into schools and departments. In the same year he announced the affiliation of the nursing program at St. Vincent's Hospital with the University's Department of Science, thereby providing a university degree to the future nurses. Professors from the University initially taught their classes at St. Vincent's.
