He soon proclaimed a motto for the University that would be the mission-driven blueprint of his tenure: \"Teaching, Faith and Service.\"  He expressed his confidence in the faculty and staff, noting that the University might be \"one of the best kept secrets in the Pacific Northwest.\" His clear goal was to form the University of Portland into the premier Catholic teaching university in the West. As a result, he increased standards in both academics and the physical facilities moved swiftly toward implementing his vision of the University. (Cf. James T.
