Michael Quinlan, CSC, who was a firm believer in physical fitness and competitive sports. The Quonset-type building, 120 by 200 feet and rising some 70 feet above the dirt floor, was completed in October 1902. It had a 12-lap track and a seating capacity for 1600 spectators. There was sufficient space for practicing baseball and football indoors. Four large electric arc lights were added in 1909 to complement the several skylights.
