The contraption shredded one of his paintings just seconds after it was sold at Sotheby’s auction house for $1.4 million. The following day, Banksy released a video showing how the trick was designed to have played out. He claimed that his intention was to completely destroy the painting, but that the shredder mechanism failed. I was intrigued. I was also convinced that I -if ever asked- might be able to help finish the job. Over the next eight months I sketched ideas, deciding against a shredder in favor of 9 pairs of mechanically-controlled scissors. This contraption is capable of slicing up any 8\"\"x11\"\" artwork into 96 rectangular pieces. These pieces then fall into a chrome tray where a valve can be opened and a 300-pounds-per-inch blast of air shoots the 96 pieces into the sky. In November 2021, the half shredded painting sold at auction for $25.4 million.\""},{"label":"Medium","value":["Wood","scissors","servos","Arduino motor controllers","chromed steel","300 psi air tank","Stepper motor"]},{"label":"Dimensions","value":"48\" x 24\" x 6\""},{"label":"Collection","value":["Pitzer 2nd Exhibit"]},{"label":"Relation","value":"covert_gallery"},{"label":"Publication Information","value":"© Mark Randall Pitzer"}],"description":"Running with scissors...while laughing all the way to the Banksy","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/portland/iiif/562a0e64-e4f3-413e-8dba-0eb7ed0dc64e/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"Running with scissors...while laughing all the way to the Banksy","height":2696,"width":1798,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/portland/iiif/562a0e64-e4f3-413e-8dba-0eb7ed0dc64e/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/tif","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/portland/iiif/562a0e64-e4f3-413e-8dba-0eb7ed0dc64e","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":1024,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":2696,"width":1798},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/portland/iiif/562a0e64-e4f3-413e-8dba-0eb7ed0dc64e/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/portland/iiif/562a0e64-e4f3-413e-8dba-0eb7ed0dc64e/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/portland/iiif/562a0e64-e4f3-413e-8dba-0eb7ed0dc64e/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/portland/iiif/logo"}
