She studied art at the Art Students League with Hans Hofmann. Gerardia was an influential early modernist in America. Her work is held by more than 100 museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and her papers are housed at the Smithsonian Archives of American Art. “Since I started painting, I have been interested in the play of light and its effect on form and color. Another quality of light, the prismatic breaking up of color, has always fascinated me.
