The original Pilot House was a one-story wooden building which stood a little to the northeast of the Library's loading dock. It featured an ice cream, malted shakes, and hamburger counter and four booths for faculty, staff and students until it closed in 1950 and was razed. Construction began on the same site for a new Pilot House opening in 1951 with increased capacity, a juke box, and three pinball machines. In 1985, the Pilot House underwent a complete remodel. When the Pilot House opened in 1986, seating increased from 160 to 260, the kitchen was at the opposite side of the building, the bookstore was expanded to a full-service bookstore, the Office of Security and Safety moved in, and an automated teller machine was placed inside for the convenience of campus members.
