During the early years the library was housed in various University buildings. In 1943, Brother David Martin, C.S.C., declared in a Bookman article: \"The greatest need of the University of Portland is a new library. The need is so great, that it is actually holding back the general advancement of the University.\" In the bleak early years of the 1950's, it looked as if prospects of a building a new library were hopeless. But, in 1955, the Friends of the Library began an intensive fund drive and the idea of a building a new library took shape and form. In 1958 the Library opened its doors to students, faculty, and friends. The 25,000 square foot building measured 112' by 90', had two floors and a mezzanine. The design featured an open concept with stacks freely and conveniently accessible. With the student population increasing each year, it soon became evident the library had to be enlarged. Work commenced on an addition that would exactly double the size of the original structure. The original lines, exterior materials, textures, form and interior open space were included in the design of the addition. It is difficult to tell where the original building and addition join.
