The broad overhang is supported by four columns sculpted by LeRoy Setziol. Each oak column has a representation of the traditional images for the writers of the four Gospels: a winged human figure (St. Matthew), a lion (St. Mark), a winged ox (St. Luke), and an eagle (St. John). Pictured here is Setziol at his studio in Sheridan OR in 1985 at work on those columns. Born near Philadelphia PA in 1915, he became an Army chaplain in the South Pacific during World War II after attending Eden Theological Seminary in Missouri and a period as pastor in upstate New York. After the war, he came to Oregon with his wife, Ruth, and decided to become an artist and so put flesh onto the dry bones of doctrine, as he might have said.  His work graces many churches and other buildings in the Northwest, including the Mago Hunt Theater (1973) here on campus.
