Shiley graduated from the University of Portland's School of Engineering in 1951. Ed Sweo graduated in 1956. Their lead gifts in 2008 allowed a complete renovation and expansion of the 1948 Engineering Building, essentially creating a state-of-the-art facility, ready to open for the 2009-2010 academic year. Shiley Hall is now the largest academic building on campus, having grown from 45,000 to 80,000 square feet. The three-story steel addition is infused by natural light with its soaring expanse of glass and includes two 80-person tiered classrooms, study areas, and faculty offices.
