In 1946, Dr. Louis Artau, a concert pianist, was engaged to establish the School of Music. By 1947, a war surplus building was brought to campus and its forty rooms redesigned for music education, with studios, rehearsal rooms, a concert hall and a smaller recital hall. The School of Music was the first co-ed curriculum on campus. (Nursing, begun in 1934, was housed off campus at St. Vincent Hospital.) Co-education for the entire university began in January 1951. The music faculty and President Rev.
