This paper uses a mixed-methods case study of the Thorns, with an intentional focus on the fans and supporters culture rather than management and players, to analyze ways the Thorns relative success can inform women's sports advocates and sports studies scholars. Drawing on a combination of historical, socio-cultural, and psychological perspectives, we suggest that the particular fan culture in Portland provides foundations for a type of agentic, inclusive, and values-based fandom that fits well with women's soccer in North America. Combined with a professional environment, high-level soccer, and intentional support for women's opportunities, this type of Thorns fandom provides an example of how hybrid and counter-gehemonic sport cultures can gain popular appeal and inform understandings of sports fandom more broadly."},{"label":"Publication Information","value":"Copyright is retained by the author. 2016 Summer Research Celebration Project."},{"label":"Document Type","value":["student project"]},{"label":"Undergraduate Collection","value":["Psychological Sciences Student Works"]},{"label":"Department","value":["Psychological Sciences"]},{"label":"College & School","value":["College of Arts and Sciences"]},{"label":"Faculty Advisor","value":["Dr. Andrew Guest"]},{"label":"Publication Date","value":"D:00 M:00 Y:2016"}],"description":"A people’s history of the Portland Thorns: Social psychological perspectives on fandom and the most popular women’s team in the world","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/portland/iiif/1a3465c1-972e-4bdd-9199-14187befa92f/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"A people-s history of the Portland Thorns- Social psychological p-2","height":1125,"width":1500,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/portland/iiif/c8b071cf-3587-48d9-ae4e-8ddbd5ff7139/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/portland/iiif/c8b071cf-3587-48d9-ae4e-8ddbd5ff7139","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":512,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":1125,"width":1500},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/portland/iiif/1a3465c1-972e-4bdd-9199-14187befa92f/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/portland/iiif/c8b071cf-3587-48d9-ae4e-8ddbd5ff7139/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/portland/iiif/c8b071cf-3587-48d9-ae4e-8ddbd5ff7139/full/300,300/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/portland/iiif/logo"}
