The pin was adopted for the Providence Sisters in 1922. The red cross symbolizes the Cross of Calvary and stands for the symbol of mercy. It likewise has the significance of being the emblem of our Holy Faith.\" (Sister Elizabeth Clare, R.N.B.S., Dean College of Nursing, in letter to Miss Myrtle L. Lyman, USCNC, November 30, 1944.) On the back of the pin is inscribed, \"Elizabeth M.
