Malibu Joe was a quiet, dignified man of Italian heritage who made his home behind a service station in central Malibu. He was often seen riding his bike--usually at a very slow pace--along the PCH, wearing his signature coat and hat, as seen here. He was beloved by local residents, who would often see him at Little League baseball games, which he enjoyed. Tragically, Malibu Joe died following a beating by an unidentified assailant in 1988. He was 96 years-old. This photo dates to about 1970. The entrance to the Malibu Pier is just outside of the shot to the right; the Kingaburger fast food restaurant is to the left."},{"label":"Note","value":"Description based on research in the Malibu Times and Los Angeles Times."},{"label":"Type","value":["Image"]},{"label":"Asset ID","value":"0112-b06f49-0001"},{"label":"Series (Malibu Historical Photographs)","value":["Malibu Times Photographs 0112"]}],"description":"Malibu Joe posing on bicycle, ca. 1970","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/pepperdine/iiif/fc54b37d-23ef-4a7a-b32b-056d61ce7b92/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"Malibu Joe posing on bicycle, ca. 1970","height":4296,"width":4350,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/pepperdine/iiif/fc54b37d-23ef-4a7a-b32b-056d61ce7b92/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/pepperdine/iiif/fc54b37d-23ef-4a7a-b32b-056d61ce7b92","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":2048,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":4296,"width":4350},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/pepperdine/iiif/fc54b37d-23ef-4a7a-b32b-056d61ce7b92/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/pepperdine/iiif/fc54b37d-23ef-4a7a-b32b-056d61ce7b92/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/pepperdine/iiif/fc54b37d-23ef-4a7a-b32b-056d61ce7b92/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/pepperdine/iiif/logo"}
