As a parallel to beat poetry, it took cast-off and neglected items from the everyday world, and reused them with new poetic meaning. Tony Berlant was born in New York City and studied at the University of California, Los Angeles, earning an MA in painting (1963) and an MFA in sculpture (1964). This work reveals the influence of California's best-known assemblage artist, Edward Kienholz. Berlant used a piece of found Plexiglas to allude to the back door of an old car. The opening appears like a window onto a passing landscape, hence the title. In Oriental Landscape, the material castoffs are transformed into an artform that strikes a precarious balance between painting and sculpture."},{"label":"Format","value":["Mixed Media"]},{"label":"Medium","value":"Mixed media assemblage"},{"label":"Type","value":["Image"]},{"label":"Source","value":["Weisman Museum Collection"]},{"label":"Collecting Area","value":["Weisman Museum"]},{"label":"Digital Publisher","value":"Pepperdine Libraries"},{"label":"Rights and Usage","value":"Images on our website are provided to encourage personal, non-commercial use, scholarly inquiry and education.
