The photo was taken in 1927 at the Santa Monica Plumbing Supply Company, located about 10th and Pico Boulevard, just around SAMOHI [Santa Monica High School]. In 1951, Asa and Grace built a home in Malibu Park above Zuma Beach. In 1955, he went to business with a partner named Bennett. The new company was called Smith-Bennett, and was located at 12th and Colorado Boulevard in Santa Monica. They opened seven branches by the early 1970s. Also, in 1955, one of their sprinkler contractors received the bid to supply Disneyland with all of their sprinklers for the next ten years. This was a great start for their new business. Our Smith family joined both horse riding clubs in Malibu-the Malibu Riders (founded by Percy Meek in 1947) and the Trancas Riders and Ropers (also founded by Percy in 1952). Asa was president of the Malibu Riders Club from about 1955 to 1958. He passed away in Thousand Oaks in 1994, aged 87 years. He retired in 1972 and his son, Don Smith, took over his partnership with Don Bennett. Don Bennett passed away in 1980. Don Smith became sold owner of the company. Also, in 1980, his brother Darrol Smith, who had sold Smith Pipe and Supply to him the same year. By this time, there were ten stores--seven from Smith-Bennett and three from Smith Pipe. Don combined the stores into one name-Smith Pipe and Supply. There are still ten stores today."},{"label":"Title","value":"Asa Smith behind the counter of Santa Monica Plumbing Supply"},{"label":"Format Details","value":"Black and white photographic print"},{"label":"Series (Trancas)","value":["Family Histories"]}],"description":"Asa Smith behind the counter of Santa Monica Plumbing Supply","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/pepperdine/iiif/e1ca82c4-b2b9-4dd7-89eb-d4b0faa934d2/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"Asa Smith behind the counter of Santa Monica Plumbing Supply","height":2441,"width":3227,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/pepperdine/iiif/e1ca82c4-b2b9-4dd7-89eb-d4b0faa934d2/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/pepperdine/iiif/e1ca82c4-b2b9-4dd7-89eb-d4b0faa934d2","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":1024,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":2441,"width":3227},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/pepperdine/iiif/e1ca82c4-b2b9-4dd7-89eb-d4b0faa934d2/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/pepperdine/iiif/e1ca82c4-b2b9-4dd7-89eb-d4b0faa934d2/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/pepperdine/iiif/e1ca82c4-b2b9-4dd7-89eb-d4b0faa934d2/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/pepperdine/iiif/logo"}
