In the 1980s he began to make art using dolls and rag toys found at thrift stores and yard sales. His Empathy Displacement series presents disheveled hand-crafted dolls made from old socks, twisted yarn, and mismatched buttons. By presenting them on a monumental scale, akin to human portraits, the artist invites us to reflect on why we transfer our emotions to inanimate matter and project sentimental feelings onto lifeless things. He said, \"You realize that the whole function of empathy is displacement. That's what I was trying to do in these pieces.”"},{"label":"Format","value":["Acrylic Painting","Found Materials","Sculpture"]},{"label":"Medium","value":"Acrylic painting on panel; found, handmade doll in painted wooden box"},{"label":"Type","value":["Image"]},{"label":"Source","value":["Weisman Museum Collection"]},{"label":"Collecting Area","value":["Weisman Museum"]},{"label":"Digital Publisher","value":"Pepperdine Libraries"},{"label":"Rights and Usage","value":"Images on our website are provided to encourage personal, non-commercial use, scholarly inquiry and education.
