Goode studied briefly at the Chouinard Art Institute in LA (now CalArts). While there he studied with Robert Irwin and counted John Altoon and Larry Bell among his classmates. According to The Los Angeles Times, “In the 1960s, Goode’s work was uncomfortably tagged as Pop art.” Goode ultimately transcends this classification, creating bodies of work with influences ranging from Midwestern iconography and environmental destruction to pop culture and the sublime. In Commissioned Work one sees influences from Goode’s Torn Cloud series (1967–76), in which the artist uses razor blades to slash through compositions of illusionistic skies, forming jagged clouds.
