Begun in the late1960s, his Ocean Park series addresses formal concerns by exploring elegant and essential relationships of line, form, and color. In these works he employs a geometric scaffolding that he shifts, aligns, and realigns to produce engaging contrasts of solid structure (the “bones” of the composition) and atmospheric color. Characteristically, these works feature broad, monumental forms animated by small passages of delicate detail. Painted late in Richard Diebenkorn’s career, Folsom Street Variations III exemplifies the luminous abstraction he pursued in the 1970s and 1980s.
