He studied art at the Cleveland Institute of Art and at Yale University, where he studied color theory with the Bauhaus master, Josef Albers. Experimenting with geometric compositions, he helped create op art in the early 1960s. Short for optical art, this style uses small geometric elements repeated in eye-dazzling patterns. His work was featured in The Responsive Eye, the first major exhibition of pop art, organized by the Museum of Modern Art in 1964. Stanczak was honored with a retrospective at the Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art in 2001."},{"label":"Format","value":["Acrylic Painting"]},{"label":"Medium","value":"Acrylic on canvas"},{"label":"Type","value":["Image"]},{"label":"Source","value":["Weisman Museum Collection"]},{"label":"Collecting Area","value":["Weisman Museum"]},{"label":"Digital Publisher","value":"Pepperdine Libraries"},{"label":"Rights and Usage","value":"Images on our website are provided to encourage personal, non-commercial use, scholarly inquiry and education.
