Williams wrote on the negative sleeve: \"Almost 5 thousand men--Army--Air Force--in the dirty holes of the ship. Layer upon layer of men--just enough room to turn.\" This photo is part of a series documenting Williams’ shipping out to Korea. The journey started in Pittsburg, California (Camp Stoneman), where a ferry carried troops to San Francisco for embarkation to Japan, and on to Korea. The bulk of the journey took place on the USS General M. C.
