This base was manned by the 3rd Missile Battalion of the 57th Air Defense Artillery. The Nike-Hercules guided missile, capable of carrying a nuclear warhead, drew the attention of the growing Peace Movement of the 1960s. The Malibu missile base (LA-78), located high in the mountains near Las Flores Canyon, was one of 16 Nike anti-aircraft sites that composed the Los Angeles Defense Area.
