Although widely acclaimed as a writer, he also was an artist who produced abstract compositions of loose calligraphic brushstrokes. His imagery of simple, graphic shapes resembles Asian writing as well as the whimsical art of Paul Klee. For Saroyan the act of painting was a means to measure the passage of time; many of his works carry inscriptions noting the specific time and place of their execution. Thursday August 1, 1968 Fresno #2 reads like a visual diary entry, intimate and immediate.
