Governor Wiliam Stoughton. Hand #1 unidentified; hand #2 Stephen Sewall (Rosenthal 532).\n<p>\nAnnotation text from the Salem Witch Trials: Restoring Justice exhibition:\n</p> <p>\nThis warrant from the chief justice of the court William Stoughton directed the sheriff of Essex County to round up “forty good and lawful men.” He was looking for jurors for the next round  of trials in Salem anticipated in September. Each man needed to be a “freeman” or voting citizen in order to serve. The trial jury comprised twelve of the 40 men. The jurors came from  towns across Essex County including Beverly, Ipswich, Rowley, Topsfield, and Wenham.
