Nearly 20 years after he arrived, he wrote the first condemnation of the witch trials and published it under his own name. His volume represents a courageous act—despite the fact that his wife Naomi testified against Bridget Bishop.\n<p><p>\nMaule had the pamphlet printed in New York in order to avoid censorship and subvert Governor William Phips’s publications ban in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Phips died in May of the same year and Acting Governor William Stoughton had Maule arrested and jailed for slander, blasphemy, and publishing without license. A Superior Court jury, made up mostly of Puritans who were traditionally prejudiced against Quakers, acquitted him contrary to the wishes of the magistrates.
