Hand #1 unidentified (Rosenthal 931).\n
\nAnnotation text from the Salem Witch Trials: Restoring Justice exhibition:\n

\nBeginning in 1696, those impacted by the crisis submitted petitions to the General Court asking to clear the records of those falsely accused of witchcraft in 1692. The legislature appointed a committee in 1710 to hear petitions, resulting in a flood of requests for restitution payments. The following year, the Province issued this reversal nullifying all convictions, judgments, and attainders against those listed.\n

\nThe blame is placed squarely on \"some of the principal Accusers and Witnesses,\" but legal authorities—sheriffs, constables, jailers, and others—were cleared and protected from future prosecution. Six of those executed were not included on this list, presumably because no petitioners applied on their behalf. A few others were condemned but not named in this reversal, and therefore remained unprotected. Even today, and despite recent efforts to serve justice, it remains a question whether the entirety of the condemned are exonerated.
"},{"label":"Language","value":["English"]},{"label":"Subject","value":["Wilds, Sarah, -1692","Wardwell, Samuel, 1643-1692","Proctor, John, 1632-1692","Parker, Mary, approximately 1631-1692","Nurse, Rebecca, 1621-1692","Jacobs, George, Sr., approximately 1620-1692","How, Elizabeth, 1637-1692","Hobbs, Abigail, 1677-","Good, Sarah, approximately 1654-1692","Willard, John, -1692","Foster, Ann, -1692?","Esty, Mary Towne, -1692","Eames, Rebecca, 1641-1721","Cory, Martha, -1692","Cory, Giles, approximately 1621-1692","Carrier, Martha, approximately 1650-1692","Burroughs, George, Sr., approximately 1650-1692","Faulkner, Abigail, Jr., 1685-"]},{"label":"Identifier","value":"DEP 01, Box 12, Folder 30"},{"label":"Provenance","value":"Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court Archives"},{"label":"Date","value":"D:17 M:10 Y:1711"},{"label":"Dimensions","value":"29.8 x 19.0 cm"},{"label":"Format","value":["legal instruments","judicial records"]},{"label":"Creator","value":["Massachusetts.
