Salem’s public school system expanded in the early 19th century. This map pinpoints the locations of the city’s 19 public schools in 1836. The Colored School was a single room inside another school building and located near the corner of what are now Washington and Bridge Streets. At the time, the Black community of 279 people was nearly 2 percent of the total population of about 15,000. The map is based on Plan of the City of Salem, 1836, in The Salem Directory, and City Register, 1837, gift of Henry Wheatland, F74.S1 S2M\n\nKey to School Locations: \n\n1.\tTapley's Brook School\n2.\tBoston Street School\n3.\tWest English School\n4.\tBeckford Street School and West Girls School\n5.\tNorth English School and North Primary School\n6.\tHigh School and Latin School\n7.\tColored School and Central School, located within Central English School\n8.\tSouth English School and South Primary School\n9.\tNorth East School\n10.\tBridge Street School\n11.\tEast English School\n12.\tEast School for Girls and East School\n"}],"description":"Salem public school locations in 1836","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/pem/iiif/0d168ba4-80d3-4593-803a-6c661e871a29/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"Salem public school locations in 1836","height":3446,"width":4596,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/pem/iiif/0d168ba4-80d3-4593-803a-6c661e871a29/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/pem/iiif/0d168ba4-80d3-4593-803a-6c661e871a29","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":1024,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4,8]}]},"height":3446,"width":4596},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/pem/iiif/0d168ba4-80d3-4593-803a-6c661e871a29/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/pem/iiif/0d168ba4-80d3-4593-803a-6c661e871a29/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/pem/iiif/0d168ba4-80d3-4593-803a-6c661e871a29/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/pem/iiif/logo"}
