Francis tells Martha of being in the trenches at Petersburg ' of the hot weather and the lack of sleep that has worn him down and of the dead and wounded in their company. He wanted to come home for the wheat harvest, but was unable to. He prays that God takes care of his family. He asks about the farm corn and sweet potatoes, and whether she has planted tobacco. At the beginning of the Civil War, Francis Marion Poteet (1827-1902) was a miller living in the Dysartsville area of McDowell County, North Carolina. He was conscripted in 1863 and seved as a private in Co. A, 49th North Carolina Infantry. At the time of the 1860 census, F. M. Poteet and his wife Martha A. E. Hendley Poteet (1826-1902) had eight children; eventually they would have thirteen. F. M. Poteet survived the war and both he and Martha died in April 1902."},{"label":"Identifier","value":"PC_1825_Poteet_Dickson_Letters_18640705"}],"description":"Letter: Francis Marion Poteet to Martha Hendley Poteet, July 5, 1864","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/ncdcr/iiif/fee53476-dc30-4d26-831f-ae96204c0f9b/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"PC_1825_Poteet_Dickson_Letters_18640705_001","height":1380,"width":867,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/ncdcr/iiif/956b344b-fb54-485f-8de7-6a10bb80e346/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jp2","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/ncdcr/iiif/956b344b-fb54-485f-8de7-6a10bb80e346","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":512,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":1380,"width":867},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/ncdcr/iiif/fee53476-dc30-4d26-831f-ae96204c0f9b/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/ncdcr/iiif/956b344b-fb54-485f-8de7-6a10bb80e346/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}},{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/ncdcr/iiif/fee53476-dc30-4d26-831f-ae96204c0f9b/canvas/_2","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"PC_1825_Poteet_Dickson_Letters_18640705_002","height":1388,"width":861,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/ncdcr/iiif/daf2e822-143d-41b8-9bc3-4b975979fdd8/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jp2","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/ncdcr/iiif/daf2e822-143d-41b8-9bc3-4b975979fdd8","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json"},"height":1388,"width":861},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/ncdcr/iiif/fee53476-dc30-4d26-831f-ae96204c0f9b/canvas/_2","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/ncdcr/iiif/daf2e822-143d-41b8-9bc3-4b975979fdd8/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}},{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/ncdcr/iiif/fee53476-dc30-4d26-831f-ae96204c0f9b/canvas/_3","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"PC_1825_Poteet_Dickson_Letters_18640705_003","height":1384,"width":861,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/ncdcr/iiif/1c069473-5c6f-486a-ae86-da449b0967fb/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jp2","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/ncdcr/iiif/1c069473-5c6f-486a-ae86-da449b0967fb","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json"},"height":1384,"width":861},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/ncdcr/iiif/fee53476-dc30-4d26-831f-ae96204c0f9b/canvas/_3","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/ncdcr/iiif/1c069473-5c6f-486a-ae86-da449b0967fb/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}},{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/ncdcr/iiif/fee53476-dc30-4d26-831f-ae96204c0f9b/canvas/_4","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"PC_1825_Poteet_Dickson_Letters_18640705_004","height":1388,"width":869,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/ncdcr/iiif/8218be67-daa6-4d5a-8810-ca6c3381775a/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jp2","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/ncdcr/iiif/8218be67-daa6-4d5a-8810-ca6c3381775a","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json"},"height":1388,"width":869},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/ncdcr/iiif/fee53476-dc30-4d26-831f-ae96204c0f9b/canvas/_4","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/ncdcr/iiif/8218be67-daa6-4d5a-8810-ca6c3381775a/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/ncdcr/iiif/956b344b-fb54-485f-8de7-6a10bb80e346/full/300,300/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/ncdcr/iiif/logo"}
