Most of collection relates to his editing The Papers of Archibald D. Murphey (Raleigh, 2 vols., 1914), including a typescript of Murphey's 1824 report on western lands to the trustees of UNC. Also an exchange of letters with Col. Bennehan Cameron concerning censorship of certain letters from Murphey to Thomas Ruffin and the Duncan Cameron-William Duffy duel of 1803. Hoyt's notes from NC newspapers, National Intelligencer, Niles Register, and the North Carolina Magazine refer to Murphey, internal improvements, sectionalism, and various North Carolinians. Also copies of 1814 letters-to-the-editor about the Battle of Kings Mountain and account by Adelaide Fries of the Moravian land suit in WIlkes Co. (N.C. Supreme Court, 1814). Photograph of a naturalization paper for Peter Stewart Ney (1820) is restricted.
