Almost half the letters were written during their courtship (1851-1853) by Vance as law student at UNC and as young lawyer in Asheville, and by Harriett living with McDowell relatives in Burke Co. These have been published in My Beloved Zebulon, edited by Elizabeth R. Cannon (Chapel Hill, 1971). Topics include friends and relatives such as the McDowells, Woodfins, Averys, Robert Vance, David L. Swain, and Augustus S. Merrimon; emigration to California; court sessions; local and national politics (1852-1853); convention for railroad from Charleston, S.C., to Cincinnati (1853); and Western Carolina (later Holston Conference) Female College in Asheville. After their marriage most of the letters are from \"Hattie\" about children, friends, the Presbyterian church, her poor health, local events, reaction to Vance's Unionism while congressman (1859-1860), a vigilance committee in Asheville, reconstruction, election of 1870 in Asheville, and Charlotte Military Institute. Vance's letters from 1854 to 1862 concern the French Broad Railroad, \"locofocoism\" of army officers, conscription resisters, yellow fever, and shortages. Other correspondents include their sons in schools, Joseph M. Atkinson, Kemp P. Battle, Robert H. Chapman, Drury Lacy, Randolph A. Shotwell, Cornelia P. Spencer, and Calvin H.
