State Archives of North Carolina"},{"label":"Language","value":["English"]},{"label":"Description","value":"These are primarily the papers of Edmund DeBerry (1781-1859) of Montgomery County, state senator (1806-1828) and Whig member of Congress (1829-1851). They include letters, deeds, bills of sale, printed campaign speeches, receipts, promissory notes, legal papers, and a small quantity of papers of and photographs possibly taken by a descendant, William Gaston DeBerry (1902-1951); the latter is of of candid scenes in Morocco, North Africa.    The papers include campaign circulars of his political opponents John A. Cameron (1829) and Lauchlin Bethune (1831), undated drafts of speeches by DeBerry, election returns for 1837 and 1839, lists of persons in Moore and Anson counties to receive federal public documents (1850). There are also receipts and lists concerning the establishment of Lawrence-ville, N.C., including construction of public buildings and sale of lots (1799-1828). Correspondence includes cover letters for resolutions from a town meeting in Fayetteville, N.C. (though not the resolutions), 1834; and letters from relatives in Mississippi and Tennessee (1847, 1853), from Daniel M. Barringer, ambassador to Spain, requesting news about the slavery question (1850), and from William F. Clegg, Methodist minister in Stokes County, N.C. (1854). Other letters (1829--1854) relate to claims of DeBerry's constituents to military pensions and land grants. Legal papers relate to N.C. Gold Mining Company (1825--1831, n.d.), and a mill on Clarks Creek (1829); James W. McRae's cotton factory, flour mill, and sawmill on Little River (1855-1859); estates of Henry Delamothe (1845), Henry and Sarah DeBerry (1826-1835), Angus Chisholm (n.d.), Nehemiah Dumas (1834), and Joseph Wilson (1847); and miscellaneous legal writs dating from 1828 and 1839. Other papers in the collection include an illustrated manuscript set of directions for constructing a bee house, deeds and land records, a slave bill of sale (1803), promissory notes, miscellaneous accounts and receipts, an undated list of officers in the local organization of Sons of Temperance, and a 1789 certificate as to the good character of Joseph Wilson of Montgomery County.    A single folder contains an 1874 court order naming William Gaston DeBerry (1818--1890) a commissioner to divide land and a copy of his will written in 1889. Another folder contains seventeen documents ranging in date from 1889 to 1925 concerning land belonging to William Gaston DeBerry (1861-1933).  The remaining papers in the collection are letters written between March and September, 1951, chiefly by William Gaston DeBerry (1902-1951) to his wife, Raye Louise (Bozeman) DeBerry. Son of William Gaston DeBerry (1861-1933), the young DeBerry interrupted his studies in electrical engiï¿½neering at the University of North Carolina (1921-1922) to become president of Phoenix Utility Company, Duluth, Minnesota. At the time these letters (which are not descriptive of his work) were written in 1951, DeBerry was purchasing and installing equipment for new oil fields in Morocco, North Africa.
