(now Eden, N.C.), to James Thomas and Delitha Skinnell Barker. George Barker was raised on a farm in Rockingham County, N.C., as one of 12 siblings. When he was 15 years old, the Barker family relocated to Cascade, Virginia, then to Danville, Virginia, shortly after. Barker dropped out of high school and worked at a grocery store. When he turned 18 years old, he went to work at Dan River Mills, a textile manufacturer in Danville, Virginia. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in September 1965, during the Vietnam War. Barker attended basic training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C.; and went through his Advanced Individual Training at Fort Bragg, N.C. He then went through food service specialist training at Fort Jackson. Upon completing his training, Barker deployed to Vietnam. After nearly a month-long journey on a troopship, he arrived in Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam. He served as a cook for the Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 54th Artillery Group, based in the town of Xuân L?c in ??ng Nai Province in southern Vietnam. After about 11 months overseas, Barker returned to the United States to attend his sister's funeral, then returned to Vietnam to complete the final 40 days of his tour. He was discharged from the U.S. Army in August 1967 in Pennsylvania. He reached the rank of Specialist-4. After his military service, Barker returned home to Danville, Virginia, and continued to work for Dan River Mills. He married Rachel Hobbs on September 27, 1967, in Yanceyville, N.C. Barker later worked for U.S. Gypsum Corporation, until he was hired by Goodyear Corporation, a tire manufacturing company, in 1972. He worked for Goodyear until his retirement in 2007.
