Messick, W. Kerr Scott, and many politicians, educators, ministers, business and community leaders in praise of his work. Topics of Coltrane's speeches include postwar agriculture (1945); Frank P. Graham's senatorial campaign (1950); state government; and race relations (1967-1968), with response from Jesse Helms. Clippings, photographs, and certificates relate to his entire career. Relating to the Methodist church are letters, minutes, programs, reports, and excerpts from debates concerning desegregation within the church organization (1964- 1967); jobs of church administrators; the board of Christian social concerns; and construction of the Methodist Building in Raleigh (1957- 1965). Also information on Negro churches in the N.C. Conference, pastors' appointments and salaries, dissent from Vietnam War (1967), Edenton Street Methodist Church, and N.C.
