These include construction agreements and receipts of payment. Included is a rental agreement with John Toney, a free man who served during the Revolutionary War on the side of the colonists. The Shaw family were Scottish immigrants, enslavers, and loyalists with a plantation in Cumberland County and smaller tracts of land in the surrounding counties. The senior Colin Shaw fought with the loyalist militia during both the Regulator Movement’s insurrection and early Revolutionary War. Colin Shaw II, the second born son of Colin Shaw was a lawyer, legislator, and eventual heir to the Shaw family estate. Colin Shaw III was the grandson of Colin Shaw and nephew of Colin Shaw II.
