Papers of Burwell S. (d. 1861) and Nancy Pate include a few business and family letters, deeds and leases, birth dates of children, tax receipts, promissory notes, and estate records (1819-1871). Papers (1854-1891) of their son John W. and his wife Henrietta (Jackson) Pate of Northampton Co., include his release as prisoner of war (1865); correspondence about cotton and railroad ties with northern commission merchants and with railroad officials (1868-1888); records of cotton liens and shipments and of lumber and ties cut and delivered; legal correspondence; and labor contracts (1866-1867). Relating to his membership on the county school committee (1885) are specifications for a school (1887), letter from prospective teacher (1886), lists of white and Negro parents with number of children in school district (n.d.); and circulars for private schools in Garysburg and Henderson (1873-1886). Personal letters concern selling of lightning rods in Virginia (1882-1883), work in New Bern (1893-1894) or with the railroad, and life in Varina, Holly Springs and Aurelian Springs; relatives in Arkansas and Mississippi referring to Methodism, temperance, and local events; and the healing powers of Polly Jackson (1866-1879).   There are also birth, death, and marriage dates of William and Absella Jackson, their children, and slaves (1765-1852); birth dates of children of Henry and Penny Boon (1800-1820); and a few papers of the Ivey family (1813-1821), including letter to soldier near Norfolk (1815). Miscellaneous material includes political party tickets and tracts (1880s); A Sermon for Soldiers by Rev. Thomas Morrow (Petersburg, 1862); grange manual (1880); summary of N.C. public school law (1885); Sunday school lessons; many advertisements for goods and entertainments; a broadside summarizing meeting of the executive committee of N.C. bondholders, held in New York City, Dec. 27, 1876."},{"label":"Digital Characteristics","value":"4 pages"},{"label":"Format","value":["Finding aids"]},{"label":"Rights","value":"The SA of NC considers this item in the public domain by U.S. law but responsibility for permissions rests with researchers."},{"label":"Source Collections","value":["Burwell S.
