She has heard that the Yankees have taken Wilmington but that the Confederates still have New Bern. New troops are arriving in the area, but she doesn't know why. She wants salt and medicine but trading is difficult. She relates news of some neighbors serving in other units, including William Anthony who she has heard was wounded at Wilmington and is now dead. She replies to her husband's letter about oysters and cornbread, and talks about other foods.
