State Archives of North Carolina"},{"label":"Language","value":["English"]},{"label":"Description","value":"These are the papers of William Sidney Wilson (1873-1918), born at Gatewood in Caswell County. He was a graduate of the University of North Carolina, class of 1899. Wilson received his license to practice law in 1900 and was chosen to serve Caswell County in the 1901 session of the General Assembly. From 1901 to 1915 he worked as corporation clerk in the secretary of state's office. From 1915 until his death on December 18, 1918, he served as legislative reference librarian, a position created as part of the North Carolina Historical Commission. The collection of papers consists of newspaper clippings on various phases of William Sidney Wilson's life, printed items, correspondence, photographs, and miscellaneous items.    Before entering the University of North Carolina, Wilson, was educated in the public schools of Caswell County, and at the Danville [Virginia] Military School. At the university he was editor-in-chief of the University Magazine.     Among other professional activities W. S. Wilson drafted the 1917 \"Act to Encourage Road Building in North Carolina by State's Aid\" and served as secretary of the North Carolina Automobile Association and as secretary of the North Carolina Council of Defense.    Newspaper clippings describe activities with which Wilson was associated and include several biographical sketches and tributes following his death. There are several photographs of W. S. Wilson and one of his brother Robert Thomas Wilson who served in the 1923 General Assembly, and a composite photograph of the 1899 state Senate.    Printed items of interest include two copies of the North Carolina University Magazine, March-April 1894, June, 1899; a UNC commencement program, 1899; the magazine Southern Goodroads, September, 1912, conï¿½taining an article by W. S. Wilson entitled \"State Aid for Road Construction;\" the publication Twentieth Century Statesmen which inï¿½cludes biographical sketches of state officials and members of the General Assembly, 1901; a program for a debate between Washington and Lee and Trinity College, March, 1918; and Admendments to Revisal of 1905 compiled by W. S. Wilson. Among other papers are letters from Wilson to his sister, recommendations from the faculty upon Wilson's graduation from UNC, a president's report for the Raleigh Country Club, and several poems by W. S.
